Time for your final hurrah at the beach and in the mountains. The opening of school is already here or right around the corner. Few students are really ready to begin another school year, but it’s here once again. For you juniors and seniors, it’s time to get ready to “hit it especially hard” and start thinking about classes, sports, clubs, service, school dances, and the DAUNTING SAT and ACT.
I’m here to help you show those Test Writers who is the boss. YOU are the boss, and you’re going to show them that you can do very well on these tests. My program features strategies which will significantly facilitate the test-taking process.
HOW is your VOCABULARY? The words of the day are: 1) WINSOME and 2)FLUMMOXED. Do you know what each word means?
WINSOME – part of speech? adjective. [Do you get a sense if it has a POSITIVE connotation, a NEGATIVE connotation, or NEITHER? (It’s positive, and it means: describing people or things that are cheerful, pleasant, or appealing; attractive or appealing in appearance or character)
FLUMMOXED – part of speech? adjective. POSITIVE, NEGATIVE, or NEITHER? (It’s negative, and it means utterly confused, bewildered or perplexed.)
Try using one of those in your next essay for English – you’ll “WOW” your teacher!!
TO BUILD YOUR VOCABULARY:
- Look at each new word you meet as a word you KNOW, SORT OF KNOW, or DON’T KNOW AT ALL. (Your mission is to BUILD YOUR VOCABULARY NOW and get as many of the “Don’t Know” words into the “Sort of Know” category, and as many of the “Sort of Know” words into the “Know” category.
- Start a “Running Vocabulary” NOW – write down new words (and meanings) you hear and meet in a vocabulary list in a notebook (write each word and meaning just once) and continue to add to that list and watch it grow. You only need to look at that list 2-3 times a week; just quickly review the words in your list and watch your vocabulary grow
- It’s been proven that students with broader vocabularies tend to do much better in school and achieve better jobs out of school! (There’s a very strong correlation between knowledge and usage of vocabulary and level of job or profession.) NOW’S THE TIME TO GET ON IT!!!!
Just some early-in-the-year tips to help you do well on the R+W section of the SAT, as well as do well in school.
